The 2005 Programme

The groups who appeared at the 2005 Alnwick International Music Festival were:

La Sabotee Sancerroise - France
From Le Sancerrois in Northern France, this group was formed in 1955 and performances are typical of the region.
Sogo - Ghana
A sogo is a Ghanaian peg-tightened drum played in royal ceremonies along with the kpanlogo drum. It is played by hand and sometimes with the use of a large curved or sharply bent stick.
Százszorszép Folk Dance Ensemble - Hungary
Formed in 1979, the members are enthusiastic young people from the town and vicinity of Martonvasar, which is 35km south-west of Budapest. The Ensemble delights audiences with traditional dance and music heritage from Hungary and ethnic Hungarian communities in neighbouring countries.
Alianza - Mexico

Formed in October 1999, the Mexican group Alianza is an independent group of young people whose desire is to express traditional Mexican music and dance. Their acute awareness of their material permits them to present a varied programme of costumes, dances and rituals from Mexican history.

Sbandieratori Città di Firenze - Italy
The rhythms and throws of the Flagwavers "City of Florence" originate from the Middle Ages. At that time the flag had a martial use or announced the beginning of celebrations. Performances aren't improvised, they are bourne out of tradition. Click on the flag for more.
Austrina & Uguntina - Latvia
The folk-dance ensemble Uguntina (pictured) from Riga's Pupils Palace, directed by Gita Udre, and the kokle ensemble Austrina will be performing folk traditions and traditional Latvian dances.
Anilana - Poland
The folk group Anilana was founded in 1970 in Chemitex Anilana and consists of 40 members. They perform dances from the Polish regions of Kurpie, Kujawi, Slask and Lublin. They also perform national dances such as Polonez, Mazur and Krakowiak. All of the dances are performed in original costume.

I nuraghi - Sardinia, Italy

The Association Folk Group Nuraghi of Sestu was founded in 1965 to preserve Sardinian culture of music, song and dance. Click on the Italian flag to find out more - if you speak Italian!.

France Marolt - Slovenia

Ethnomusicologist France Marolt (1891-1951) established this folk-dance group in 1948 with the students at the University of Ljubljana. The group has successfully presented the tradition of Slovenian popular dance both at home and abroad winning the European Prize for Folk Art in 1974. Click on the flag for more.

Mock Turtle Soup - USA
Fiddle, banjo, and mandolin are tossed in the pot together with everything from penny whistle to djembe, from guitar to spoons, from home-made banjos to home-made wah pedals, from bodhran to brass to vocals to a taste of funky electric, thanks to this exciting three-piece band. Minnesota Choral Theater - USA
Formed in 1995, the Minnesota Choral Theater is an independent organisation under the direction of Russian-born conductor Dr Albert Grotell. The ensemble promotes quality singing of distinctive musical literature.
